When can I start my puppy on heartworm and flea prevention?
Most products are approved for 7-8 weeks of age, depending on the product.
How often should I deworm my new puppy or kitten?
Puppies and kittens should be dewormed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks with Pyrantel Pamoate. Also, every puppy or kitten should be checked for worms and other parasites on their initial visit, regardless of their deworming schedule.
How often should I feed my puppy or kitten?
This depends on its size. Smaller animals need smaller, more frequent feeding. Take the daily recommendation from the bag and split it into 3-5 feedings. It is also important to monitor food and water intake as well as urine and fecal output.
When should I bring my puppy or kitten to the vet?
As soon as possible after bringing them home. Vaccines start at 9 weeks for kittens and 6-8 weeks for puppies.
When should I get my puppy or kitten spayed or neutered?
Although some shelters are neutering animals at a very young age, we recommend 6 months. We feel it important to spay females before the first heat.
What should I do if I forget to give my dog their heartworm medicine?
This answer depends on timing. If it has only been a month, you are probably ok to restart without concern. However, if it was longer than that, you should call for advice since a break in coverage could have worrisome results down the road.
Should I give my dog heartworm preventative all year?
Yes, mosquitos are prevalent in East Tennessee most of the year, and don’t forget about the internal parasite prevention your heartworm medicine provides. This is needed year-round.
How often should I have my dog heartworm tested?
The American Heartworm Society recommends annual testing, even for dogs on preventatives.
If my dog has been on heartworm preventatives every month, why should I test them?
Yearly testing is important to monitor the efficacy of the product. There have been cases of dogs developing heartworms while on preventive. Most of these products have a guarantee but are only valid if yearly tests have been done.
Should I give my cat heartworm preventative?
Absolutely. Even though heartworms aren’t as prevalent in cats, they can kill them, and there is no treatment for cats. There is an argument about whether to give your indoor cat prevention, but definitely your outdoor cat.
Why do I have to test my dog before starting heartworm prevention?
Giving heartworm prevention to a heartworm-positive dog can cause an anaphylactic reaction due to the microfilaria (baby worms in the bloodstream) dying and can be fatal.
Why do you examine my pet before you give it vaccines?
It is important to confirm your pet is healthy before putting any stress on their immune system. We take your pet’s health seriously at Chilhowee Veterinary Clinic.
Why do I need to bring a stool sample to my pet’s yearly visit?
To rule out any internal parasite infestation. It is also important to monitor the efficacy of your heartworm prevention in preventing internal parasites.
When should I start scheduling dental cleanings for my pets?
Ideally, every 1-2 years or as recommended by your veterinarian.
